It may come as little surprise given her theatrical stage presence that Janelle Monáe has a flair for acting. Now the Atlanta-based singer, songwriter and label mogul is making her big screen debut in the new film Moonlight, which opened in New York and Los Angeles on October 21st, and will hit theaters nationwide, including in Georgia, on Friday, October 28th.
Also starring Trevante Rhodes, Andre Holland and Naomi Harris, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood in Miami.
Monae also has a lead role in the film Hidden Figures, which was shot in Atlanta and tells the story of the integral part three black women played in astronaut John Glenn’s first rocket launch into earth orbit. Also starring Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer, it will begin a limited release on Christmas Day, with wide release following in early January. Both films are considered likely Oscar contenders.
