The same day that Outkast performs the first of three greatly anticipated (and long sold-out) hometown shows in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, Andre Benjamin will be hitting the big screen as groundbreaking rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix in the feature-length biopic All is By My Side.
Better known as Andre 3000, Benjamin has appeared several other movies and television series but this is his first lead role in a major film. Although already skilled on guitar, Benjamin is right handed and thus rehearsed six hours daily for months under the direction of instructor Andrew Rollins in order to learn to look effortless playing the guitar left-handed, as Hendrix did.
Though Benjamin’s performance has received acclaim following several festival screenings, it should be noted that All is By My Side focuses on the early portion of Hendrix’s rise to stardom, and features none of his original music since the filmmakers could not secure the rights from the Hendrix estate. All is By My Side, rated R, will open in select cities and theaters on Sept. 26th.
