Big Star Tribute in Athens to Include Mike Mills and Others

Mike Mills of R.E.M. will participate in a live orchestrated performance of legendary Memphis band Big Star’s complete third album – titled Third or Sister Lovers, or both, depending on which version you pick up – at a free outdoor concert in Athens on Saturday, Nov. 8th. Other musicians participating in the special concert will include original Big Star drummer Jody Stephens, early R.E.M. producer Mitch Easter, Chris Stamey of the dB’s, Pat Sansone from Wilco and latter-day Big Star member Ken Stringfellow, also one-half of the power-pop band The Posies. This core group will be augmented by a chamber orchestra and various guest vocalists, and they’re expected to perform selections from Big Star’s two other albums as well.

Beginning at 4 p.m. with opening sets from Athens acts The Glands, New Madrid, Blacknerdninja and Ruby the RabbitFoot, the event at College Square in downtown Athens is a special presentation of the city’s Slingshot festival of music, electronic art, comedy, film and technology, which made its debut in March 2013. Next year’s Slingshot will happen March 26-28, and submissions for inclusion are now being accepted at
