Archival Bessie Jones Recordings To Be Released

The historical-focused Tompkins Square record label is releasing a two-CD set of music from gospel-folk singer Bessie Jones culled from folk music historian Alan Lomax’s original tapes, including solo recordings and songs with Jones’ longtime group, the Georgia Sea Island Singers.

Scheduled for release on Oct. 28th, Get in Union: Bessie Jones with the Georgia Sea Island Singers and Others will feature 26 previously unreleased tracks, including unheard collaborations with Rev. Gary Davis, Sweet Papa Stovepipe and Georgia Sea Island Singers member Mable Hillery, all recorded by Lomax between 1959 and 1966.

The granddaughter of a slave born in Africa, Jones died in 1984 of complications from leukemia. She was 82 years old.
